Mit der Einführung und zunehmenden Nutzung von elektrisch betriebenen Fahrzeugen ist mit einer weiteren Zunahme des Bedarfs an Lithium zu rechnen. In den Grubenwässern des stillgelegten Bergwerks Ibbenbüren der ehemaligen RAG Anthrazit Ibbenbüren GmbH sind erhöhte Lithium-Gehalte analysiert worden. Die Konzentrationen nehmen mit der Tiefe zu. Das Flutungskonzept sieht allerdings nicht die gezielte Fassung stärker lithiumhaltiger Wässer aus tieferen Bergwerksteilen vor. Nach erfolgter Flutung werden die aus den Grubenbauen abfließenden Wässer vielmehr überwiegend aus Sickerwasser bzw. aus Grundwasserneubildung bestehen.
