Sie fassen Blockabschnitte zusammen und liegen immer vollständig innerhalb von Stadtteilen, bilden diese aber nicht immer flächendeckend ab. Insbesondere Frei- und Grünflächen gehören in der Regel keinem Stadtviertel an. Typische Stadtviertel sind Kirchspiele, Dorfkerne, Wohnsiedlungen, Gewerbeparks und Industriegebiete. In Köln kommt dem Viertel (Veedel) auch umgangssprachlich besondere Bedeutung zu. Bei der Stadtviertelbenamung erhalten alle Industriegebiete das Kürzel GI und alle Gewerbegebiete das Kürzel GE vorangestellt.<br />
