Die Antwort auf diese Frage kann nur historisch belegt erfolgen. Pollenanalysen beschreiben die Waldzusammensetzung der Vergangenheit. Andere Teile von Bäumen sind selten in Mooren oder Sedimenten erhalten und ihre Funde statistisch kaum auswertbar. Die Fichte wächst heutzutage in Nordrhein-Westfalen auf ca. 252.000 ha Waldfläche und dominiert besonders in den Mittelgebirgsregionen. Orkanbedingte Waldschäden der Fichtenbestände bewirkten ein Umdenken in den Waldnutzungsplänen.
