Nördlich von Mützenich befinden sich im Hohen Venn mehrere auffällige, ringförmige oder lang gezogene Geländeformen. Es sind fossile Relikte der letzten Eiszeit, die als Lithalsas bezeichnet werden. Einer der größten ist der Mützenicher Lithalsa, der auch als Geotop ausgewiesen ist. Die Frosthügel entstanden während der letzten Eiszeit im Permafrostboden durch Bildung von Eislinsen, die den Boden emporhoben. Bei Erwärmung der oberen Erdschichten im Sommer glitt der Boden nach außen ab und formte die ringförmigen Wälle.
